Review of Into the Wild (2007) by Simon C — 04 Sep 2015
They take tremendous liberties with the story, but stick to the major events in his McCandle's life. I would have done it differently, with the author realizing he was wrong about the story he had originally printed about Chris at the beginning.
They don't even mention that in the film, and they only show him thinking he mixed up the plants, which the author of the book originally wrote that Chris had done in his newspaper article, but they have him writing wild potato root on his list.
.... It's actually quite genius the way they do it, so an attentive reader of the book will catch what they're doing in the film, which is giving you his first person perspective only .... without the hindsight of the author.
.. As for all the made up dialogue/monologue, no one really knows for certain what he did out there by himself anyway, and they never say "based on the book" although they do thank the author for his "efforts".
The film is really a piece of literature in its own right. Just like Wild, INto the Wild gets better as the film progresses. 5 stars. a masterpiece.
