Review of Into the Wild (2007) by Rainer K — 18 Dec 2011
A rather pointless film about a strange guy who's decision to leave his whole life behind and go "into the wild" is not comprehensible for me. Although I appreciate the attempt to deconstruct the American dream I simply can't cope with his mentality and I don't need some months somewhere in the Alaskan wilderness to realize that happiness is to be shared.
Maybe I'd have liked it more or appreciated the acting, directing and amazing vast landscape shots a bit more if I had cared about the subject or the character.
The moments when it captures the simple beauty of nature and life are great but after all it's a long and dragging melodramatic fictionized version of a "Universum" episode (Universum is a series of nature and culture documentaries in Austrian TV).
