This movie seemed tailor made for me. Small-scale, intimate, post-apocalypse story starring two actresses I love? Based on the description I went in prepared to enjoy the story wherever it took me. There was a lot of potential here but I feel like it really dropped the ball.
The performances were great but the characters weren't. I never really felt the full intensity of their bond or understood their reasoning behind certain choices of theirs. I don't think the end of the movie was earned by what came before it.
The ending belonged to a different film that was more fable and folktale than what we'd gotten. With a different movie, perhaps it would have worked, but with this one it just felt ridiculous. This is a movie I wanted to like but every time it started to win me back, it pushed me away again.
