Review of Into the Abyss (2011) by Keith L — 02 Apr 2012
A good documentary about capital punishment that should be watched by all. That being said, I watched this expecting to have my mind changed about the issue, it wasn't. I am pro-death penalty. Herzog examines the issue from all sides (victims, family, death row employees, convicts), but in my opinion doesn't delve deeply enough into whether the criminals were TRULY guilty of their crimes.
He allows them to state their innocence, he examines the crimes, but leaves reasonable doubt as to whether the evidence against them (none was provided here) was really that damning, allowing the viewer to be convinced that they JUST MIGHT be executing an innocent man.
This is the ONLY thing in this excellent documentary which can be construed (in my mind) as bias, but it was enough that it didn't change my mind about the issue at hand. Still worth a watch!
