Review of Into the Abyss (2011) by Azrafael A — 19 Apr 2012
Herzog is a somewhat sloppy documentary maker -- you can see a cameraman & camera in the mirror during a pan shot around a room; the people he interviews have no credibility. But his point is clear, which I prefer, since that is the case in 99% of documentaries, but typically in those documentaries there is a pretense of objectivity.
Ultimately, the irony is that I came into the documentary with Herzog's point of view (that the death penalty probably shouldn't exist), but left with the opposite point of view -- that Herzog found the most sympathetic death row inmate, and yet it still seemed the world would be better off without him -- now multiple his crime x10 and tell me that person doesn't deserve to be killed.
