Review of Interview with the Vampire (1994) by Michelle H — 08 Jul 2013
This is my favorite vampire movie. I think a lot of people did not know what to make of it because it is the first movie to portray vampires in a dramatic way, rather than just creatures of horror. This is basically the vampire equivalent of a soap opera, based on the bestselling Anne Rice novel.
It tells the story of a vampire family through the centuries, the father being the self-centered and seductive lestat, played by a blond wigged, Tom Cruise. All of the actors where very good in the rolls, Kristen Dundst was a standout as the child vampire Claudia, and was totally convincing as woman trapped forever in a child's body.
Although a drama, the film does not shy away from the blood and gore. There is also a creepy and disturbing sensuality to a lot of the blood sucking scenes that makes me shudder every time I watch them.
The film goes from the 1700's to modern day, and is richly detailed, with amazing costumes and decadent set peices. Yes, the film does get a little melodramatic at times, but overall it is faithful to the spirit of the book and is beautiful, disturbing, and unforgettable.
A must see for lovers of the vampire genre!
