Review of Interview with the Vampire (1994) by Ben L — 17 Sep 2017
What if a man was so distraught and depressed with his life that he decided to extend it indefinitely? That?s the moronic question that begins this tale of vampires in America. The mere premise set up at the beginning was so befuddling to me that I didn?t even know if I could tolerate watching any further.
There was some interesting stuff going on when Kirsten Dunst was brought into the story, and the undertone of homosexuality in the vampire relationships was something they could have used to great effect.
So I paid attention but the movie continued to make strange and frustrating choices. The trip to Paris was perhaps the most infuriating section of the film, to the point that I almost gave up on it altogether.
I started to get very confused over what it took to kill a vampire because it seemed their rules were all over the place and undefined. By the time it reached the final scenes I was begging for it to end.
The framing device didn?t even have a logical reason for being there, and also ends in an unsatisfying fashion. I think there were elements of Interview with the Vampire that had some potential, but it didn?t live up to it?s potential at all.
