Review of Interiors (1978) by Sean P — 16 Oct 2007
Wedged in between Allen's two masterpieces in 77's Annie Hall and 79's Manhattan, you can forgive the general public for perhaps forgetting this lengthy tale of selfhood and family relationships.
But Interiors is just as important as those two classics of cinema. It's Allen's darling in that it was his chance to show that he doesn't have to rely on humour to lighten the load or soften the blow in his piercing drama.
He impresses in every sense. Perhaps the best sign of what Allen wanted to do with this film is that he's not part of the cast. The script is not awkward or heavy-handed as some critics panned it, merely very studied in its delivery.
Probably the best psychological drama outside of some of Ingmar Bergman's classics. Touching cinema.
