Review of Insidious (2011) by Joe H — 11 Aug 2013
The film is like most horror movies for the first half. There are ghosts, ghouls, hauntings, objects moving when they shouldn't, but those things don't make a film scary by themselves, and that's why most of these kinds of horror movies sometimes seem strangely restrained, and that's why ] was refreshed when the film took a radical change in direction for the third act, allowing stuff to really hit the fan.
In all honesty, the third act of this film will blow you away, blending your average jump scenes with true terror and horrifyingly feel-bad conclusion. It is in the third act, that the film refreshingly distances itself from its genre brothers and sisters, and truly becomes its own beast.
