Review of Inherit the Wind (1960) by Jonathan A — 15 Jun 2007
This is my all time favorite movie for two reasons. One, the play and the movie have influenced american thought for over half a century. You have to appreciate its influence. All Christians should see this movie to understand how they are viewed in this country.
Two, the script is written beautifully. "Do you think about the things you do think about?" Brillant! Also, (ok there is a three) I promised myself that I would never become like the christians depicted in the film.
(even though they never existed) Also, I was inspired to read all of Darwin's books like Brady's real life counterpart (Not McCarthy, the other one, and I want to read some of Dawkins too.) The black in white is better than the colored version.
The play is better and less narrow minded. Both are horribly inaccurate historically, but the writers were not trying to be accurate they were trying to debate the HUAC, McCarthy, and communism. It is kinda ignorant to use this movie to debate creation vs evolution.
It is sad to see the brillance of it denegrated so. It is about the freedom to consider and teach all sides. If you disagree with a side, to quote the play "...I think that's besides the point.
".
