Review of Inherit the Wind (1960) by Marcus W — 06 Apr 2015
Starring Spencer Tracy, Fredric March and Gene Kelly. Stagey but still effective film version of the play which itself is based on the Scopes Trial of 1925. Teacher Bertram Cates (Dick York, soon to be the first Darrin on TV's "Bewitched") is arrested after discussing evolution with his class.
A media frenzy occurs when two high-profile lawyers are enlisted to represent both sides in the case. The highlights are the courtroom showdowns between Tracy's Henry Drummond (based on Clarence Darrow) and March's Matthew Harrison Brady (based on William Jennings Bryan).
Kelly is fine in a rare non-musical role as the sarcastic reporter covering the trial; his character is based on H.L. Menken. Directed by Stanley Kramer.
