Review of Inherit the Wind (1960) by David C — 02 Dec 2008
Despite the fact that this film is about defending truth from ignorance, there are some major inaccuracies from the actual Scopes trial. For example, the christians were depicted in this film as hostile, hate filled bigots who jailed a teacher for teaching evolutionism.
In reality, Scopes was never in danger of being jailed, and the defending lawyer (Darrow) said, "I don't know as I was ever in a community in my life where my religious ideas differed as widely from the great mass as I have found them since I have been in Tennessee.
Yet I came here a perfect stranger and I can say what I have said before that I have not found upon any body's part ? any citizen here in this town or outside the slightest discourtesy. I have been treated better, kindlier and more hospitably than I fancied would have been the case in the north.
" I suppose Hollywood's role is to turn history into drama, but it's frustrating to see the lesson of truth to only beget more ignorance.
