Review of Inherent Vice (2014) by Rita T — 12 Jan 2015
This is good Paul Thomas Anderson, but not great. Joaquin Phoenix and Josh Brolin give exceptional performances in this movie. Especially Joaquin Phoenix, who literally plays The Dude of our era. His performance as private eye Doc Sportello who is a hippie stoner to a tee is what keeps you watching the movie.
The storyline is all over the place, but I think that's what PTA intended as you can tell he relies heavily on the characters in the film to keep the movie going...and they do. From Martin Short, to Benicio Del Toro, to Reese Witherspoon, everybody keeps the movie going with their small performances in the film.
But it's really Sam Waterson's daughter Katherine Waterson who gives one of the best breakout performances of all time. She does not hold back from her mysterious, sexy and very bad girl take in the film.
And when I say very bad....you'll see what I mean when you see the movie. It's not everyone's groove, but I think if your a PTA fan you should check this movie out. As this is a very bizarre take on the 1970's and one can argue that that is what the 1970's is all about.
...bizarreness.
