Review of Incredibles 2 (2018) by Ed C — 26 Jun 2018
Disappointing because the original was such a delight. In film one, everything was new (and old, as in early '60s nostalgia). Original super heroes. An original problem for super heroes (having to go underground because the public was tired of the collateral damage caused when saving them from villains).
A wonderful original character in the super hero costume designer. The problem with Incredibles 2 is that so many things are a rerun. Same characters facing the same problem that we reasonably thought was solved in the first film.
The costume designer essentially repeats her scenes from the first film. Elastigirl turning into a parachute was a wonderful sight gag in the first film. Here it's repeated multiple times and gets stale.
Frozone repeats his schtick of looking for his suit while his wife objects to his going out crime fighting. There's far less real emotion this time around. In the first film, all the Parrs had one simple power (except Violet, who had two).
In this one, baby Jack-Jack appears to have about 10, all rather tedious. Several of his powers were already revealed in the first film (though the rest of the family seems not to have noticed them). There are occasional "continuity" anachronisms, too.
We have a character in the early '60s speculating if someone has "hacked" into a system, and we have high resolution cameras so small they can fit on an ID card, impossible during the time in which the film is set.
The sequel, perhaps inevitably, suffers from a lack of originality.
