Review of In the Mood for Love (2000) by John A — 31 Aug 2012
The greatness of this film begins with its cinematography, bringing a nostalgia-tinged beauty to the streets and offices of 1960s Hong Kong. Having Tony Leung and Magge Cheung in the leads doesn't hurt either.
The painful irony of the film rests in this couple's possessing the makings of a true and fulfilling marriage--their being together leads to the creation of something new (the story)--and yet, because of their strong moral code, they will not allow themselves to pursue it further.
