Review of In the Mood for Love (2000) by Gavin T — 04 Mar 2009
Wong Kar Wai clearly doesn't make formulaic romance films to suit the Western demographic - his narratives hone in on the complexities of physical attraction, sex and love. They probe and postulate that the common myth of "happily ever after" is reserved solely for couples content to buy into such an illusion.
His characters are awkward, hopeless and loney - real people! The endings are never truly conclusive. To top it off - the cinematography and visual style of Wong Kar Wai's films cannot be imitated by any other director on the planet - he is a true visionary.
