Review of In the Mood for Love (2000) by Jayakrishnan R — 26 Apr 2016
In the Mood for Love features great performances and unfolds in an unconventional style. I didn't really care for how much the emphasis was placed on the settings, however. It is sold as a period piece set in 1960s Hong Kong, but this just seemed to be an excuse for the costume design.
We never see the city, and when it changes location to Singapore, we just see one small room in the city. We get an epilogue in Angkor Wat, where the male lead managed to visit on a day without any tourists in flip-flops.
It seems the settings were the early 2000s method of adding hashtags to the film to get more interest. I would have gotten more invested in the love story, which was quite original, if I wasn't distracted by the needless location changes.
