Review of In the Cut (2003) by Cody Y — 11 Mar 2013
I thought that it was incredibly well acted, especially by Ryan and Ruffalo (saying that, Ruffalo can do very little wrong in my eyes!) and I thought the direction was great from Campion - subtle in places, pointed in others.
However, the 'love' story (if you can call it that) and the murder mystery do sit quite uncomfortably together and while I know that in real life things do sit uncomfortably together, I believe that too much realism can destroy a film, no matter what the intentions are.
And also, while I believe there is a place for sex in movies, the graphic nature of the sex in this particular movie was unnecessary - it added nothing to the plot or characterisation (except for painting Frannie as completely desperate for human contact, which we could figure out without seeing it.
) All in all a good movie, but slightly ruined by the pretensious script and a voyeuristic attitude.
