Review of In the Cut (2003) by Andy W — 23 Nov 2009
A messy and disturbing but almost always fascinating film. While the thriller aspect doesn't work and Ryan's character is made to do things in certain situations for no plausible reason, there are some very interesting scenes, mostly with Mark Ruffalo (who is pretty good here by the way) that involve attraction, trust, sex, and domination, among other things. The film also looks and sounds quiet beautiful. Blurry edges on the screen in nearly every shot lead one to question the importance of what is in or out of focus. The sound work is eery and enveloping as well. Unfortunately the plot is ultimately stuck in convention and after we realize what the film is leading up to the style starts to wear thin.
Meg Ryan isn't bad here, but is it just me, or does she always have a permanent sneer on her face?
