Review of In Search of a Midnight Kiss (2007) by Mike M — 31 May 2008
The film is slight, and though McNairy and Simmonds share an easy chemistry, they can't quite summon up the emotional depth Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy managed for Linklater in "Before Sunrise", the sense their encounter is a once-in-a-lifetime encounter for star-crossed soulmates: Holdridge, in his youthful exuberance, maybe picks the wrong ending, allows the film to droop past its natural endpoint when it might easily have waltzed off into the night.
But it's sweet and funny, easily the best-looking date movie in some time, and the director works a very particular magic in reclaiming Los Angeles for pedestrians, as anyone who's ever had cause to try crossing Sunset and Vine will surely appreciate.
