Review of In Search of a Midnight Kiss (2007) by Josh S — 27 Oct 2008
Well, not really. In truth it's more of a **1/2 movie. An A for effort, C for execution, B for amateurish execution. I was increasingly aggravated by the andocentric myopia ran amuck in this film and the generic dorkus meets manic pixie dream girl dynamic that doesn't seem believable, and at times borderlines on societal retardation. The film's aesthetic is in direct contrast to its usage of memory flashbacks/"Remember the Times?" and horrible soundtrack, but overall it's a lovely concept and the execution could be worse...
...until the end when it becomes an insanely problematic piece of male wish fulfillment that Linklater had the common fucking decency to skirt in 'Before Sunrise'. This is a movie about making every dream for a LOSER MALE come true over the course of the night. The final ten minutes are wretched and indicative of everything that is wrong with hipster-indie cinema today. I don't really like "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist' but there's plenty in the margins to keep one entertained. This is in some ways a purer experience until it becomes puerile. A girl who's an archetype is turned victim for receptacle. Call it FILM SCHOOL: THE MOVIE.
I don't claim to know much about women but I know enough to know that this girl is a product of selfish, shallow mind, and this guy is his stand-in, and this simplistic fantasy (while - NOTE! - certainly not really a One Star Film) is in this day and age an embarrassing representation of my generation. Fuck it.
