Review of In a Lonely Place (1950) by Joe L — 20 Jul 2009
Released the same year as 'sunset boulevard,' here is another dark, self-referential hollywood noir. it improves on the plot of hitchcock's 'suspicion' by giving it a proper ending, and by exploring darker questions of the psyche.
gloria grahame is fantastic in a role that ends up becoming an inversion of the barbara stanwyck character in 'double indemnity.' and of course, here again is mr. bogart, pitch perfect as the enigmatic antihero.
the story ultimately asks the question: does suspicion of someone drive them to fulfill your fears?
