Review of In a Lonely Place (1950) by Miguel A — 06 Mar 2012
Perfect example of how the Hays Code took the bite out of any cinematic adaptation of the best hard-boiled crime of the era. Dorothy B. Hughes's brilliant and brutal critique of misogyny loses all its legs in this tepid melodrama, replacing a startling exploration of sociopathy with a tedious innocent-man-wronged-by-his-own-violent-temper narrative.
So disappointing.
