Review of Imitation of Life (1959) by Anna L — 06 Nov 2011
The clothes3 are fabulous, but Sirk's Imitation of Life is a little too heavy on the melodrama for me. Most of the characters are unlikable, except for Juanita Moore's Annie, who is such a rundown and exhausted individual that it's depressing to watch her surrounded by such extravagance and frankly selfish, useless people.
It's cheesy and while it has some moments of solid ideas, I don't think that is quite manages to circumvent the Hollywood ideology if that is indeed what it is trying to do.
