Review of I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK (2006) by Dfg D — 27 May 2010
After the vengeance trilogy a romantic comedy was the last thing on Park's mind, but this is a bizzare offbeat romance set in a (wait for it) a mental asylum.
The cinematography is beautiful and it sounds great, the problem resides in the depth of characters and the hopelessely confusing storyline. Being used to working hard to understand films such as A Tale Of Two Sisters I was able to grasp the concepts and the audience is taught more along the way.
There are some hilarious moments that will make you chuckle at the madness of it all.
Basically the main character thinks she is a robot due to a schizophrenic family and is taken to the asylum after cutting her wrists at work. The actress who plays her is likable and really does well with the character.
This about summarises the acting which is exceptional on such a weird topic in film. Violent in places, but with enough light hearted beautiful iconic scenes that will make this a great watch every now and again.
Overall: Not for everyone! People will dismiss this as a confusing mess. You have to work at it, but this mesmerising film is essential to any world cinema fan!
8.2/10.
