Review of Ill Manors (2012) by Aslyn E — 11 Dec 2012
Plan B attempts to make Pulp Fiction set in London with light hip-hop musical tones. What this ends up as is a series of actually quite good powerful scenes but not much else in between. Films like this live or die by the authenticity of the script and actors and I'm happy to say that they pass the test, they are totally believable- menacing and sympathetic where required.
It plays put like a selection of hood stories with some overlapping characters and a few cases of the same event told from more than one perspective. So far so Pulp, but there's no dark comedy here, just unflinching misery for almost everyone involved, that's not a criticism per se as I guess that is the desired effect BUT it hardly makes for an enjoyable watch.
I wasn't too keen on the rapping Plan-B does to introduce characters, it tended to break the immersion when it goes from film to music video. Overall though I liked this film, there are some very memorable moments and it reveals some interesting things that these kebab shop guys get up to in the streets.
Lol.
