Review of Ikiru (1952) by Matt S — 03 Nov 2007
A fable in the vein of Itâ??s a Wonderful Life or even Field of Dreams, Kurosawaâ??s Ikiru portrays a cancer-ridden man forced to reevaluate his life in a journey of self-discovery. The results of that journey are illuminating; Mr.
Watanabe realizes the real tragedy is not that he is dying, but that he never really lived. The film goes on to suggest that we can only judge the worth of our lives by our own standards, not by those of anyone else.
The sillouette shot that addresses the sadness of â??forgotten sunsetsâ?? is one I will never forget. â??Life is short â?? Fall in Love, Dear Maiden.â??
