Review of Ikiru (1952) by Chase H — 17 Dec 2007
Kurosawa-san, Japan's most cherished director as he masterfully conveyed the world of the samurai, the Shakespearian trajedy within the kingdoms of old, and even an empire of dreams. To me, they are all next to nothing when compared to what I consider to be his greatest film. In "Ikiru", he simply conveys the world through the eyes of an old bureaucrat dying of cancer. While the majority of Kurosawa's more popular films showcase swords clashing, this particular story simply involves a man battling the bureacratic process of transforming a bug infested, waste land into a children's playground.
This film also features perhaps my favorite closing shot to any film I have ever seen.
