Review of Ikiru (1952) by Virgil B — 31 Mar 2009
They say this movie is one of the greatest ever made, perhaps an overstatement? I don't think so, yes the obvious main message of the movie is nothing new, it has been done a thousand times before.
however, nothing that I have ever seen has come close to expressing what this film does. It covers a multitude of subjects and binds them into a single narrative. The acting is superb. The movie crosses between humerus and serious intertwining them with expert subtlety.
The movie covers both general meaning of life type questions as well as personal character development. There are very few movies which even approach the artistic skill of this film.
