Review of Ikiru (1952) by Tamara S — 28 Apr 2009
This is among the most outstanding films I have ever seen. Kurosawa's portrait of a man on the brink of death takes no easy routes, thematically or narratively speaking. Its artistic bravery is something to be admired, but more importantly, this film deserves to be labelled as profound.
Not only did it stimulate me emotionally without being manipulative, but by the end I felt like I had been bestowed with some greater insight. This is a movie to be cherished... it sheds some light on the topic of what it means to be alive without preaching or delving into useless melancholy.
I wasn't just touched by Ikiru. I was moved more than I can possibly explain.
