Review of Ikiru (1952) by Lesley N — 28 Jan 2010
With only six months to live, Watanabe - who's spent his life working as a mind-numbingly dull government bureaucrat and who lives with his son and daughter- in-law, who'd patently prefer it if they had the place to themselves - needs to find some meaning in his rapidly-running-out time on earth.
Slow and measured, yet despite such an unpromising premise, uplifting and optimistic, this is a universal film that should be seen once by everybody in the universe at least once before they die. Preferably sooner rather than later.
