Review of Ikiru (1952) by Lauree K — 19 Mar 2010
"Ikiru" ("To Live") is a masterpiece, and possibly Akira Kurosawa's finest film in a long and storied career.
Unlike the samurai period pieces Kurosawa is most renowned for, "Ikiru" is a contemporary drama. It tells the story of Kanji Watanabe (Takashi Shimura), a journeyman bureaucrat who only begins truly living when he discovers he has terminal cancer. A standard storyline by now, but Kurosawa injects so much feeling and humanity into the story it's impossible not to be moved by the story.
A tale of redemption, forgiveness, and life in the face of death, the haunting imagery and story of "Ikiru" will stay with you long after the affecting final scenes.
