Review of Ikiru (1952) by Adrian B — 02 Dec 2010
Watching films under director Akiro Kurosawa is definately a suggestion. "Ikuru," which was released between his breathtaking works "Rashomon" and "The Seven Samurai," is about a man who discovers he has stomach cancer (or what the doctors called an ulcer).
He is given months to live and for the first while, he is utterly depressed that his death will be pre-mature. However, he sees a small light that influences him to take on a major project before he succumbs to his illness, in which he will build a park.
The film demonstrates that Kurosawa could take on other projects in addition to his fabulous fighting films. The film is heartbraking, and will easily cause tears to develop within your eyes. It is indeed lovely.
One small thing is the length, and that is the last 40 minutes. Perhaps it could have been trimmed about 10 minutes, that's all. However, that does not effect that overall power of this film. It is indeed, another great one from the Japanese master, Kurosawa.
