Review of Ikiru (1952) by Kenny K — 17 Mar 2012
Akira Kurosawa proves he's as adept at modern-day existentialism as he is at medieval swordplay. His protagonist in this moving (and admittedly slow-moving) classic learns he has just a few months to live.
Unused to living at all (he's a town bureaucrat), he has to learn how and finally succeeds, gloriously. Watch for the brilliant editing in the last half hour as his fellow bureaucrats self-justify at his wake as we intercut to our hero's fervid actions in the final days of his life.
Beautiful and profound, this film made me want to take a bigger bite out of life.
