Review of if.... (1968) by Grace D — 29 May 2008
Perhaps the hype for this was too great, but this was a bit of a letdown. I know it's a black comedy, with satire all over the place, but I just didn't find it as funny and interesting as I thought I would.
I love O Lucky Man (the movie they did after this), but this one just seems "mini," to use Anderson's favorite term. There are enough things going on here to keep it interesting, for sure, but I just wasn't blown away.
McDowell is fairly great, though he would soon eclipse his role here. This has to be the first film to depict young people going beserk and shooting up their classmates, but for what it is, even that was a little underwhelming.
Shocking, for sure, but maybe I've been desensitized to that sort of thing. In short, this was good, but not nearly as great as what was to come.
