Review of if.... (1968) by Paul B — 05 Jul 2014
Metaphorical look at life in a boy's public school, in all its barely-disguised adolescent barbarity. Nearly flawless in its execution, and still amazingly relevant. In fact, given its notorious conclusion, possibly more relevant today than ever.
One of the very best films ever made about revolution, mainly because of its HONESTY concerning the subject. It also contains one of the most intelligent representations of adolescence ever caught on film.
Inspired partly by Vigo's Zero de Conduite, if.... stands on its own thanks to a masterful turn from Malcolm McDowell (laying the groundwork for his depiction of Alex in A Clockwork Orange), elegant visuals courtesy of director Lindsay Anderson and cinematographer Miroslav Ondricek, and brilliant script by Anderson and David Sherwin.
A true classic.
