Review of Ichi the Killer (2001) by Tyler H — 08 Jan 2010
Umm...Fuck this movie. It's choppy, it's awkward, and nothing really adds up. Some of the really annoying things about this film that I didn't "get", I'm going to chalk up to my narrow view of the Japanese culture, the rest are a laundry list of genuine problems that make this movie awful.
There is little to no explanation of who the characters are, or why you should even give a shit about anything that's happening to them. Come to think of it you don't even know why they give a shit about anything that's happening to them. Character after forgettable character keep getting thrown into the mix just to be maimed in a ludacrous fashion, (sometimes) briefly interrogated, and killed.
By the end of the film it's hard to know what to think as you're riddled with new, potentially false information, which is never varified or even explored.
Ultimately, I was left scratching my head asking myself questions like, "Why did anything in the last 5 minutes just happen?", and "What's the connection?", and "Why is everyone so stupid?", and most important of all "Did I really just waste more than two hours of my life on this shit?".
