Review of Ichi the Killer (2001) by Thomas D — 24 Jul 2010

A crazy story about a psychopath (Ichi) that ends up despising the act of killing. Brainwashed by some dude, Ichi is convinced that all 'bullies' should die for terrorizing and torturing others, by being tortured and mutilated themselves! With this in mind, Ichi throws on his 'kill suit' which consists of many dirt bike pads and some bad ass heel blades that cut through Japanese gansters like hot knives to butter! Somewhere along the line, Ichi develops a perverse pleasure at the sight or thought of rape? I guess he thinks he is doing the right thing by doing the wrong thing, or something like that?! Idk, basically the dude has a few coals missing from the ole' campfire, you know, a few cards missing from the deck.

..you know, few cans short of a six pack!!! you get it! The plot may be on the thin side, but the buckets and vats of blood pouring out of the screen in every scene makes up for it! I mean this movie is an intestine strewn gore fest! A lot of the effects are pretty cheesed, and the movie seems to operate on a next to nothing budget, but the effort is obvious and all in all, 'Ichi' makes for a pretty disgustingly entertaining gem.

I found a really cool 'Bag of Blood' edition that has all kinds of cool fake blood spilling around inside of the dvd case! It's pretty awesome! If your into cult classics, horror movies, or asian cinema or maybe a mix of all of the above, Ichi is probably right up your alley.

I hear there is an anime also, review to come :) Ichi = 3.0 starz.
