Review of Ichi the Killer (2001) by Phillip V — 15 Jul 2014
I'll keep this brief because this film is not for everyone. I'll just say that if you're a fan of Takashi Miike, this is a must watch. If not, this probably won't be your cup of tea. For me, it took about an hour into the film to decide if I was actually enjoying it, but as it progressed, I found that it was surprisingly deeper than I had anticipated.
So if you started it then turned it off after a half hour, you missed out on a lot. I'll leave by saying that the ending is masterful and ties the film together nicely while leaving some things to ponder.
To those worried about the violence and gore: the worst part of it was the violence towards women which was graphic, and for the most part, the most disturbing thing in the film. The rest of the gore is pretty silly (they only worked with a $1.
5 million budget and it shows.) Really thought this was a pretty cool film and would watch again down the road.
