Review of Ice Cold in Alex (1958) by Duncan G — 03 Aug 2008
Whilst being one of the best war films I have ever seen, Ice Cold in Alex may be a bit of a slog for those who cannot roll with its slow pace and general approach to drama and tension. For me though, this was part of the film's appeal, and more important still was the message it put across: that the differences between men, women, and those on each side of the conflict really aren't that big when you're trying to survive together.
John Mills performs brilliantly as the damanged, alcoholic Captain Anson, and Anthony Qualye is equally compelling as the mysterious "South African" soldier. Worth a watch if you appreciate the war film genre.
