Review of I Walked with a Zombie (1943) by Masorad ( — 20 Apr 2009
Tourneur and Lewton, working from a title the higher-ups at RKO handed down, deliver one of the most irreducibly atmospheric "horror" films of the 40s. Truer to its source material than most zombie reels, IWWAZ is an image-rich phantasmagoria that doesn't short-sell, but is rather almost respectful of its characters and you, the audience.
Real craftsmanship here.
