Review of I Walked with a Zombie (1943) by Alexandre C — 19 May 2011
This is not the zombie movie the way modern audiences know zombie movies. The zombie here is the voodoo/Haitian type involving spiritualism and black magic. This is a Val Lewton production directed by Jacques Tourneur.
Like what he did with "Cat People," Tourneur effectively uses shadows and atmosphere to create a sense of dread. It doesn't actually SCARE you in the conventional way but it does creep you out and it does so beautifully.
