Review of I, Tonya (2017) by Bigscreen454 — 04 Mar 2018
It’s a great movie about a dysfunctional family from Hicksville USA where Tonya achieves Olympic glory. Based on a true story about people who don’t want to talk about truth. In fact, Tonya says at one time in the film that “truth does not exist.” Some of the dysfunctionality seems made up or hard to believe it is truthful at times during the film. Such as the one time Tonya’s boyfriend shoots her and the cops let him go because he can apparently “talk himself out of anything.” It portrays Tonya to be not only a Olympian but also a survivor. The mother in the story played by Allison Janney gave a phenomenal performance as a mother who didn’t give a damn about her daughter. We seldom see portrayals like this on the big screen. She doesn’t love her daughter. I believe she should get the Oscar for which she is nominated for in the Best Supporting Actress Category. I liked the scene where tonya hugged her mom and she didn’t hug her back. THEN she asks her mother if she ever loved her. The type of love the mother had for her daughter is referenced and ‘tough love’ seems to be the theme. There were some great moments in the film that get you to think Tonya has it hard and maybe builds some sympathy for her character. I also think Margot Robbie did an excellent job with her character, the acting was superb. Kinda makes you wonder where she puts her mind at- the scene where she is preparing to go perform on the olympic ice and she cries with a single tear falling down her face, superb! There were other moments where Tonya cries that are also well done by Margot Robbie.
The supporting characters were also great. With it based on real characters makes you think we need to do more with America’s in shambles education system. The characters were stupid and that’s why they were caught.
Overall I highly recommend seeing I Tonya, it is a very human story with a great portrayal by all actors making a believable story and it brings back the nostalgia of the Olympics.
