Review of I, Tonya (2017) by David F — 14 Nov 2018
A waggishly paradoxical biography on Former Olympic Figure Skater, Tonya Harding, revealed through a series of interview narratives with her closest relationships surrounding the influential--yet destructive--relationship with her mother, abusive ex-husband, homicidal bodyguard, tender-hearted coach, and manipulative reporters. The resulting brash nature of Tonya Harding herself propels the plot, but each character receives an earmark that is both impactful and enjoyably enthralling. Margot Robbie shares her bewitching lead performance of an almost unlikable character, and the same can be said of Allison Janey as her 'devil-woman' mother, LaVona Harding, who's easily in direct competition for most unlikable character that we love to hate. I really wish I had given this film a viewing much sooner because it turned out to be far more interesting than I had originally anticipated.
