Review of I, Tonya (2017) by Brent A — 20 Jan 2018
"I, Tonya" is a good movie if not a great one. That's not to say that it didn't have great performances. Margot Robbie was effective and transformative in the main role, but Allison Janney absolutely stole the show as Tonya's mom, and they should probably just hand over the Best Supporting Actress statue to her now.
Sebastian Stan shows that he can actually act when he's not dressed up like the Winter Soldier, and Paul Walter Hauser is absolutely hilarious as Shawn Eckart. I did enjoy the unreliable narrator format of the film, but that being said, it doesn't really break that much ground in terms of biopic arcs.
The one thing that I could do without was the director making the film seem like a Spotify playlist gone amok, as you couldn't swing a skating cat around without hitting another 70's or 80's song.
WE GET IT. You admire Scorcese, Craig Gillespie. Anyway, we'll chalk this one up to "liked it," not "loved it," though I have great admiration for the two main female performances.
GRADE: 8/10 IMDB, 4/5 RT, B+.
