Review of I, Tonya (2017) by Kevin S — 20 Jan 2018
This is a good film, not a great one. I highly suspect that the desire to portray Harding sympathetically took out a lot of the complexity of the character. And once the movie gets so far, if you were alive and remember the Kerrigan incident well, it gets a bit boring towards the end. Honestly, the film should have been "I, Shawn". Then you could be a bit crazier and show the sympathetic picture of Harding, along with the media portrayal of her, without committing to either as the truth.
The fourth wall breaking is unnecessary and mostly doesn't add to the film. In spite of it happening fairly frequently, it also seems out of place and gimmicky. W.
Allison Janney is great in this, and Robbie is solid too. Any scene with Janney is way more interesting than anything else in the film. This is a "see on Netflix" film, in my opinion, despite the great performances.
