Review of I Served the King of England (2007) by Thomas L — 07 Sep 2008
Definitely one of the most original films I've ever seen. It's basically a magical realist fable set against historical events in Czechoslovakia from 1933-63. The main character is this shrimp named Jan whose ambitions are simple: Make a million dollars and open his hotel.
He finally does, but at quite a price. Julia Jentsch is awesome as that brain-washed Hitler-loving teacher. This is basically the opposite of who she was as Sophie Scholl in Sophie Scholl: The Final Days.
Also, in a sense, the country is sort of a character.
