Review of I Never Sang for My Father (1970) by Aidan H — 31 Mar 2010
A mis-cast Hackman stars in this so-so drama about a man's love-hate affair with his cantankerous and annoying father. Its a plodding, made-for-theatre affair with some OK acting, bogged down by its domestic structure and setting.
However, its Douglas' show all the way and the rest of the cast can do little else but let the old guy blow the rest of them off screen. If you're a fan of Hackman's muscular but emotional style, this is not one for you.
