Review of I Love You Phillip Morris (2010) by Mark B — 27 May 2012
I Love You Phillip Morris is a great mix of comedy, drama, and romance. This true story about a homosexual con-man who finds true love in prison is surprisingly sweet. Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor both hand in fine performances (especially McGregor who had me in tears at one point).
The film was a little heavy-handed on the love scenes, but the romance of the characters felt truer than a lot of convoluted garbage that's written for hunks to say in chick-flicks. The movie is paced well and keeps you guessing - just when you think you know what's coming, a curve ball is thrown.
Though overtly homosexual (avoid this movie if you can't handle it), this movie is extremely entertaining. By the end, it's title alone is even witty. This is a great addition to Jim Carrey's canon of diverse films.
