Most people take the film too seriously, missing the complete message. Love yourself for everything you are and everything you're not. Renee's whole life is about being "beautiful", to the point where she doesn't find herself worthy of love, whether it be romantic or platonic.
Only once she can love herself does she find the true beauty in herself. I can understand why most would find certain aspects to the film unappealing, but on a personal level, I found it rather delightful.
